Abstract

There is a push to adopt educational practices fostering holistic student development in K-12 due to current uncertain times. To understand what these new practices entail, we take a global policy perspective and identify trends that will likely shape the future of education focused on holistic student development. We identified eight trends for future-focused education and discuss how these can be mapped to holistic student development. These trends represent three interconnected dimensions of education – Why (goals for education), How (the design and organization of education), and What (the content of education). We identified 20 sub-trends that reflect the multifaceted nature of the trends. Teacher capabilities required to facilitate the implementation of these trends were described as well. These provide a robust base for (re)imagining how to prepare K-12 students (and teachers) as change-agents instead of only a workforce.
