Abstract

Background: Zoonotic infections pose a highly complicated problem in modern healthcare, since (1) many stakeholders with differing interests are involved, (2) there is no clear solution, and (3) they have a potentially big societal and economic impact. Dealing with such infections requires flexible solutions and inter-disciplinary cooperation. However, previous infectious outbreaks show this remains challenging. Training risk- and crisis-communication and cooperation skills is paramount. Serious gaming offers a safe environment for such training, whereby factors like time pressure and emotions can be simulated.

Description of the game: The eZoon game offers a low-key skills training environment to be used individually online and /or during group training sessions. The game consists of a storyline that guides the game-player through a fictional bird-flu outbreak. Throughout the course of this outbreak, nine dilemma’s must be solved. These are decisions with no clear right or wrong answer and that are typically not covered by any of the (numerous) available protocols or guidelines. Highly differing and even contradictory interests (e.g. public health, economy, animal health) must be weighed during each of them. NPCs (Non-Player Characters) provide the game-player with insight into their perspectives and background information about potential consequences of the decisions.
After completion of the game, the game-player is presented with feedback on their decision making style (e.g., is it primarily focused on public health?), their cooperation style (e.g., with whom do they cooperate?) and the impact of their decisions (e.g., do others agree with their decision and why?).

Practical description of demo: Conference visitors can play (a part of) the (Dutch) game. They will not only experience what it is like to train your skill through serious gaming, but also get a glimpse of the complicated world of zoonotic infections. Demo presenters will provide background information and provide insight in the feedback mechanics.
