    Abstract

There is a large and growing interest for biomass as a source for renewable energy. At TNO an extensive bio-energy research program is going on. The main activities consist of research on new thermal conversion technologies, optimization of existing technologies and demonstration of commercially available technologies. Projects presented in this paper are: demonstration of a 5 MWth gasification system with CHP (combined heat and power), mathematical modeling of an integrated biomass gasification system based on a circulating fluidized bed with a combined cycle (IBG-CFB-CC), a novel technology for fast pyrolysis of biomass (PYROS), hydrothermal liquefaction (HTU®) of biomass, and supercritical water gasification (SWG).
