Abstract

Integrated land and water information system (ILWIS) is an integrated geographic information system (GIS) package. The most recent version of ILWIS offers a range of image processing, vector, raster, geostatistical, statistical, database, and similar operations. The biggest advantage of ILWIS is that it is a compact package with a diverse vector and raster-based GIS functionality and the biggest disadvantage are bugs and instabilities, and necessity to import data to ILWIS format from other more popular GIS packages. In the most recent version of ILWIS, one can import GIS layers from a wide range of packages and formats. This is possible due to two built-in translation tools: GeoGateway and GDAL. The chapter explains how to import an existing digital elevation model (DEM) or derive it from the sampled elevations. It works with sampled elevations digitized from the 1:50,000 topo maps and the 30 m resolution SRTM image. The chapter also presents two ways to derive LSPs/LSOs in ILWIS: (a) By using built in commands and (b) by building and running scripts. ILWIS has a limited number of built-in land-surface parameterization algorithms. These are mainly focused on derivation of land-surface parameters related to hydrology.
