Abstract
Persuasive communication programmes aimed countering ethnic prejudice generally do not result in the desired effects. A possible explanation is that in designing such videos relevant theoretical insights were ignored. In this article the effects of specially constructed videos considering these theoretical perspectives are discussed. Theoretically three factors appear relevant: (1) stressing similarities between dutchmen and ethnic groups. (2) exposure to a lot of ethnic actors and (3) providing explicit information on the aims of the communication. Results suggested that a video utilizing these three factors results in more positive judgments of ethnic groups. In particular explicit conclusions have a significant impact. Finally, some implications for designing new communication campaigns will be discussed.
