Abstract

The article seeks to analyze the understanding of what public space is in Latin America, how it has evolved over the years in the Mexican context, explaining the latest efforts to involve society in the decision-making process for the design of public spaces and the challenges encountered. Two cases of urban projects that include open spaces and that still face the limitations of citizen participation are explained, leaving a brief overview of the importance of involving society in the planning and design process of public spaces. This article is the first part of a doctoral research conducted in the Netherlands at the University of Twente.
