Abstract
Caprolactam is industrially recovered from an aqueous feed containing ammonium sulphate by extraction with an organic solvent (toluene) followed by back-extraction with water. In this paper the characteristics for these extraction in the Bateman Pulsed Column were evaluated. Pilot plant experiments were performed to determine the hydraulic and mass transfer characteristics as a function of the operating parameters. The experimental conditions covered the industrial operating range with respect of concentrations, temperature and phase continuity. The obtained hydraulic data could be related and described well via empirical correlations using physical properties, energy and input and phase flows.
