Abstract
Innovation is of vital importance to organizations whereby it is becoming increasingly clear that the individual innovative employee has an important role. In this article the authors describe the results of a qualitative case study based on interviews at the IT company Topicus in the Duch town of Deventer. The influence of innovation personal characteristics (creativity, psychological empowerment, optimism) and work/context factors (supportive leadership, perceived room for autonomy, external contacts and innovative teamwork) on showing innovative work behavior (IWB) was investigated. Based on this study, it is concluded that there is an interaction between the mentioned personal characteristics and work/context factors and the employee with IWB, whereby there is a converting role for the ‘innovation energy’ of employees. This is the vitality, strength and enthusiasm to generate, introduce or apply new ideas,
processes, products or procedures. These results of this survey are helpful in identifying and supporting employees with IWB. The article concludes with practical recommendations for organizations in the field of organizational development, selection and coaching of employees with IWB and their managers.
