Because of changes in the conditions of construction companies in the last few years the importance of innovations has been increasing. Generating innovative constructional solutions as an answer to the awareness of the clients to the whole life cycle of a construction facility becomes a necessary prerequisite to gain competitive advantages in the future. Innovations can no longer be a random activity. They have to be developed and realized in innovation processes, which are fixed to the culture, the strategy and the organization of a construction company. This paper aims at determining the ways the innovation activities of construction companies can be designed. It is based on a research project carried out by the Institute of Construction Engineering and Management, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology .
