Abstract

Most people agree that lying is intentional, that is, performed with a specific purpose of deceiving. Brain and nonverbal studies suggest that telling the truth is an automatic response and that engaging in lying is deliberate and requires higher brain processes, including inhibiting the truth response, constructing new information, and taking perspective of the other perso's mental states.
