Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the main developments and trends in international diversity in doctoral education with respect to entrance requirements, types of doctoral education, diversity of outputs, supervision, examination, funding and status of doctoral candidates, the weight and forms of teaching and research, the labour market and value of the PhD. This overview is followed by an analysis of international dimensions in doctoral education: international student trends (numbers, origin and destination), study abroad as part of the doctoral degree, international supervision, equivalency issues and the challenges related to these trends.
