Abstract
The manufacture of oxygenators today is based on hollow fiber membranes. While the short-term applications of these oxygenators have become part of clinical routine, there are still challenges for long-term usability, to establish a more reliable addition to or indeed replacement for mechanical ventilation. In the following, two approaches and the results of a number of groups working with hollow fiber membrane technology are introduced. To summarize these two ap proaches: the first is a combination of pumps and oxygenators as integrated components; the second is concerned with paracorporeal systems which function without the classic components of extracorporeal circulation. This research is at an advanced stage and the next step into clinical application can be expected in the near future.
