Abstract

Two explanatory models for party-choice, analyzed with LISREL (Jöreskog and Sörbom, 1989), are examined using data from the National Election Study 1989. Apart from 'long term' characteristics of 1506 voters such as background information, religion, political values (postmaterialism), left-right selfplacement and social values, also 'short term' characteristics are considered in the first model, including, among others, opinions about politicians. In the second model the left-right selfplacement is removed. It is demonstrated that the second model, on the basis of theoretical implications, is preferable. The explained variance of party-choice (63%) remains high. It is shown that religion, political and social values are important predictors for party-choice. Moreover, opinions a bout politicians are found to be relatively important.
