Abstract
The role of human capital has received strong attention in entrepreneurship research. However, the effects of human resource management (HRM) in entrepreneurial firms are underexplored. This paper reports the results of a meta-analysis comprising of 49 studies that examined HRM practices in small and medium sized entrepreneurial firms. Our results indicate that HRM practices are correlated with firm performance (r=.145). Moreover, HRM practices that focus on exploration produce higher effect sizes than traditional HRM practices. Consequently, entrepreneurial firms need to design and implement HRM practices that support opportunity recognition and the discovery of new and innovative ideas in order to foster firm performance.
