Abstract
dc-field-effect studies of the Ge(001) surface are reported which clearly indicate the existence of a metallic or nearly metallic surface state, in agreement with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements by Kevan and Stoffel [Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 702 (1984)]. Furthermore, we will give an estimate of the density of such ‘‘metallic’’ surface states.
