Abstract

The quality of filled rubber compounds is highly dependent on the uniform dispersion of fillers throughout the rubber matrix. Poor filler dispersion results in deterioration of processing and end-use properties of compounds and vulcanizates. Basically, the dispersion of fillers in rubber compounds is classified into two different levels: micro- and macro-dispersion. This work presents the impact of these two dispersion levels on the properties of silica-filled tire tread compounds. The key parameters influencing silica dispersion in the compounds will be discussed.
