Modelling the Interaction between Marine Sand Waves and Cohesive Sediment

Abstract

Sand waves are rhythmic bed features commonly found on the bed of shallow shelf seas such as the North Sea. These bedforms, with a wavelength of hundreds of meters, height of several meters and migration rate of meters per year, can pose a severe danger to marine infrastructure: foundations of windfarms might be weakened, cables might be exposed or navigation channels might reduce in depth. As such, understanding the dynamics of these bedforms is key in marine spatial planning.
