    Abstract

Despite generally being considered international by nature, research has not received adequate attention in broader discussions regarding the internationalization of higher education. Limited coverage in the literature tends to focus on only certain aspects of research with regard to its internationalization (see chapter 18 of this volume). After having outlined rationales, this chapter explores several factors that affect the process and extent of international collaboration in research at national levels.
