Abstract
The context in which recent developments in the assessment of learning have evolved is analysed. Performance assessment principles and classical theories in the assessment of learning are reviewed, compared and their strengths and weaknesses evaluated. Current trends in further developments in the assessment field are mentioned along with the possibilities offered by new technical improvements. The papers in this special issue are included as illustrations of the above-mentioned developments. To close the paper, some conclusions are drawn emphasising further research required to achieve sounder assessment practices.
