    Abstract

    Luminescence decay and non-saturable absorption experiments in erbium-doped aluminum oxide waveguides determine the energy-transfer-upconversion parameter and reveal the presence of quenched ions. We quantify the percentage of quenched ions and their impact on amplifier performance.
