Abstract

A three-stage research project has been executed to develop ducted axial-fans with increased efficiency. In the first stage a design method has been developed in which various conflicting design criteria can be incorporated. Based on this design method, an optimised design has been determined through the use of a genetic optimisation algorithm. In the second stage, the correct performance of this optimised design has been verified, using RANS-based CFD-simulations. In the third stage, a prototype of the optimised design has been tested in a windtunnel, which demonstrated improvements in efficiency of 4%.
