Abstract

Thin film study into Nb-Mo binary alloy in which ambient annealing and in-situ GIXRD revealed that amorphous oxidation occurs. This is explained as to being caused by a discrepancy of the Hume-Rothery rules. The inclusion of oxygen as a "third metal" breaks the rule about the maximum difference in atomic radii between all used elements in the alloy. Therefore, amorphization is expected to occur, which is shown to be the case.
