N2 - The scientific understanding of the energy and water fluxes between land and atmosphere primarily predicates our capacity to describe, model, and predict the highly complex Earth system, which is formed by mutually interlinked components (land, atmosphere, and ocean). A credible representation of land surface processes and interactions, including energy, mass and momentum fluxes, as well as biogeochemical cycles, in Earth System Models (ESMs) is crucially important.
