Abstract

Protein-based gels contain proteins and peptides as the structural elements. By virtue of their bioactive nature and high water retention capacity, these hydrogels act as important carrier matrices for biomedical applications. This chapter gives an insight into the unique properties of the major proteins (e.g., collagen, elastin, gelatin, silk protein), which are used as the structuring material for the fabrication of the protein-based gels. It provides a comprehensive review of the methods of preparation and the applications of the protein-based gels in drug delivery and tissue engineering.
