Abstract
Buried planar and channel waveguides are demonstrated in proton implanted sapphire and Ti:sapphire. The simplicity of the fabrication technique results in a large flexibility for the design of versatile guiding structures. Good control over the implantation parameters provides excellent light confinement in both passive and active waveguides.
