Abstract
High potential secondary school students won’t choose university physics if they perceive it as outdated and irrelevant. Quantum physics offers an opportunity to counter this, as research shows implementing ‘nature-of-science’ topics into quantum lessons engages students. Pupils encounter for the first time a topic where understanding models' limitations is essential. Students grasp that physicists still have open questions about what quantum effects mean for reality. Teachers see presenting physics as a human endeavour, not just formulas, has advantages. Research on teaching materials integrating philosophical questions in quantum physics highlights incorporating Nature of Science discussions helps students appreciate the dynamic, evolving nature of knowledge. This contributes to effective strategies for teaching science in a way that fosters critical thinking and appreciation for the scientific process. It is important to help teachers by developing effective techniques for making quantum physics engaging and relevant.
