Abstract
A theoretical and experimental approach to studying the growth of thiobacilli on ferrous iron and pyrite is presented. The balanced stoichiometric equation for bacterial growth is given for the production of one C-mole of biomass. Off-gas analysis in order to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide utilization rates and a biological oxygen monitor for oxygen utilization rate measurement off-line are the two main experimental tools used. The equipment is described and illustrated with data from batch and continuous culture of thiobacilli on ferrous iron and batch culture on pyrite.
