Abstract

Bus Rapid Transit services offer higher flexibility in comparison to rail based mass transit systems; however they are often faced with operational difficulties and inefficiencies. One such inefficiency may be long overall travel times due to frequent stops. Limited stop services offer a possible means to reduce travel time in these services. The main objective of this research is to develop a spatial analysis based method to reduce travel time by implementation of limited stop services. In order to generate and evaluate an itinerary of limited stop services, two GIS based approaches have been developed to analyse the importance of each bus station. In the first approach, the bus stop importance is analysed based on the characteristics of its location. In the second approach, the demand of the bus stops is analysed based on travel patterns. To assess these approaches, three scenarios for limited stop services are developed and evaluated based on travel time savings, and their effect on potential passenger numbers.
