N2 - The importance of the endothelial glycocalyx for vascular homeostasis is becoming more and more evident. This review addresses the potential relation between a damaged glycocalyx and the process of atherosclerosis, including the associated impairment in blood-flow regulation. We envision restoration of glycocalyx perturbation in the future as a potential therapy for early treatment of cardiovascular disease.
