    Abstract

A number of serious accidents has occurred due to a runaway reaction of a heterogeneous liquid-liquid reaction whereby a secondary side reaction was triggered. A basic lack of proper knowledge of all the phenomena, occurring in such a system, is one of the prime causes that may lead to overheating and eventually a thermal runaway. Therefore, a better understanding of these kinds of processes is of great importance for the safe and economic design as well as safe operation of those reactions. This thesis deals with the safe operation of a multiple liquid-liquid reaction in a semi-batch reactor in the example of the nitric acid oxidation of 2-octanol.
