Abstract

The principal safety considerations inherent to MR are documented and areas of controversy indicated. The safety recommendations proposed by the main regulatory bodies are tabulated, and explained briefly. Discrepancies in the recommendations of these bodies regarding occupational exposure to static magnetic fields and low-frequency magnetic fields are highlighted and discussed. Some general issues relating to the regulation of the MR environment are examined. Finally, two case histories, where the implementation of legislation that would seriously have hindered the use of MR are given.
