Abstract

In this chapter, an overview of the added value of self-control training (SCT) and an SCT app for treatment of aggression is provided. Research shows that self-control is related to reactive aggression. While most self-control interventions require cognitive effort, self-control training (SCT) targets the automatic route. In SCT, the participant is asked to suppress dominant responses by using their non-dominant hand for daily tasks such as drinking. Research has shown that this surprisingly straightforward intervention is effective in increasing self-control with small to medium effect sizes. A mobile app is a suitable and scalable way to deliver SCT to people with aggression regulation problems. By means of a co-creation process, an SCT app with reminders; clear illustrations, as little text as possible; and an overall positive approach was developed. This app can be used as an addition to existing interventions with a cognitive focus to bolster their effectiveness.
