Abstract

A sensor has an array of memristive sensor elements 30a, whose electrical resistance is changed by the current flowing through the device. Multiple sensors arranged in parallel with each other are used over a single sensor to increase reliability of measurements. The array may be formed of multiple conductive wires 40, in rows and columns in the case of a two dimensional array, with a sensor element 30 at each intersection point of the wires. The resistance characteristic of the memristors 30 is measured and is indicative of exposure to a species to be sensed, for example a gas. The top surface (22, fig 1) of each memory-resistor (14, fig 1) may be exposed rather than covered by a wire (10, fig 1), allowing interaction with a species. The sensor may be a gas sensor formed of multiple one-dimensional arrays, each sensitive to a different species. The measured resistance may indicate a specific concentration of a gas.
