    Abstract

Sputtered Pd/Co multilayers are studied by angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic methods. The results reveal complex bonding between Pd, Co and O atoms at the top surface and the first Pd/Co interface and essentially homogeneous smooth surfaces. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy apparently depends on the thickness of the Pd layers.
