Abstract

A synthesis tool to select promising separation routes to purify active pharmaceutical ingredients is introduced in this paper. It combines heuristics with flowsheet simulations to systematically generate and compare alternatives. The application of this framework to the purification of progesterone led to new insights that must be confirmed by experiments.
