Abstract
During 1988 the pre‐pilot phase of the European DELTA programme took place. It is an extensive research and development programme to stimulate advanced learning technology in corporate training on a European scale. An overview is given of the background of the initiation of the research programme. Major outcomes of the pre‐pilot are discussed, such as the LSRM framework for communication in this area, ideas on standardisation, three possible educational settings and the type of courses that can be distinguished. Some ideas are discussed regarding a European database on training courses. Also an overview is given of the current DELTA programme to show its direction, and finally some remarks are made on the future “main” phase of DELTA.
