Abstract

As the field of organ-on-chip (OoC) has flourished in recent decades, the absence of common design standards has resulted in a diverse, albeit disjointed, ecosystem of platforms and peripherals. Here, we present the Translational OoC Platform Starter Kit (the TOP Starter Kit), a modular OoC platform with standardized interfacing. The TOP Starter Kit is a novel hybrid between configurable and dynamically reconfigurable microfluidics. It allows arbitrary combinations of microfluidic modules to be realized by simply exchanging a central Microfluidic Building Block (MFBB). This architecture offers a powerful simplification of the OoC design space: A chip designer needs only to adhere to ISO interfacing standards to ensure that their device can be immediately used in a wide range of different fit-to-purpose fluidic circuits without ever designing a custom Fluidic Circuit Board (FCB).
