Abstract

The mechanism of the function of bipolar membrane can be rationalized by a hypothesis which postulates a catalytic reaction for the electrodialytic water dissociation. Based on this hypothesis, chemical and thermal very stable bipolar membranes can be prepared as multilayer structures which can be operated efficiently at current densities in excess of 0.1 A/cm2.
