    Abstract

This paper defines the quality factor of a continuous-wave laser and relates it to the laser line width. By systematically including spontaneous emission into the calculation, we show that the Q-factor of a lasing resonator is finite, because the gain becomes smaller than the losses and, consequently, any coherent state inside the laser resonator decays with half the coherence time of the emitted laser light. The Schawlow-Townes line width of a laser is then straight-forwardly derived.
