Abstract
The 'Third Mission' of universities includes enabling their students to understand the dilemmas of the Anthropocene and to see them as a starting point for creative, transformative action. Teaching at universities needs a 'planetary perspective', framed by a critical understanding of the limitations of the resources required for the survival of the human species. It also needs space for experiments, including socio-technological and economic ones. The integration of research, experimentation and learning should become a permanent task, organized in trans-disciplinary and trans-sectoral ways, integrating knowledge and perspectives from academics, professionals and non-academics with different epistemic foundations, with a strong impact orientation. The article illustrates this approach with two current examples from the Netherlands: The Transdisciplinary Master-Insert 'Shaping Responsible Futures' and the Smart Solutions Semester.
