Abstract

In the following, the diversity of services which a distributed system can provide is illustrated, and a main classification of services is presented. Services are described in an informal but abstract way, conforming with the current descriptions used by ISO in its OSI/RM related (draft) standards. This work was originally produced as a contribution to the COST11bis LAN project, subgroup on Internetworking.
