Abstract

Geo-spatial information, i.e. information about objects and facts with spatial reference, is an essential part of the national and international infrastructure for the information society. It is estimated that some 80% of our daily decisions rely on geo-spatial information. Geographic information systems (GIS), which allow for the acquisition, storage, manipulation, analysis, visualization and dissemination of geo-spatial information, are therefore of prime interest to society at large. Due to the demands of a number of modern applications-we mention only car navigation and disaster management as two very obvious examplesthe updating cycles of the past, amounting to years, are no longer acceptable. Today’s applications require much more current information. Thus the need arises for frequent updates of geo-spatial information.
