In the debate on sustainable urban development ecological issues face economic and social objectives. The ecological assessment of urban ecosystems is much more difficult than that in landscape ecosystems. The article gives an overview on methods to cover the spatial ecological structure of urban areas and makes suggestions how to improve methods of urban ecological assessment in the context of sustainable development. It ends with an outlook on possibilities how to model urban matter flow.
