Abstract
Designing maps for the Web is a new and challenging task. The cartographer must consider the limitations and opportunities offered by on-screen maps in general and by the special characteristics of the Web in particular. Even without using the Web, onscreen maps offer more facilities than paper maps, of which interaction is the most prominent. Furthermore, on-screen map design is no longer restricted by factors related to physical map reproduction, although the cartographer needs to bear in mind that some users may want to print web maps. Of course disadvantages also exist as has been explained in Section 4.4.
