Abstract

Alumina and alumina/zirconia membranes were prepared and their pH and thermal stability was investigated. The preparation methods used were coating of the boehmite particles with zirconia species in the liquid phase for Al/Zr membranes and sol-gel methods for both alumina and Al/Zr supported membranes. Investigation was performed by measuring change in mobility and particle size in the liquid phase and changes in the pore structure after drying and calcination of the membranes. Interaction between boehmite and zirconia species or adsorption of zirconia complexes on boehmite could not be established, so it is not sure if there is any coating of the particles. The thermal stability of alumina/zirconia membranes however is somewhat better than that of pure alumina membranes.
